Description

Revered in China as the ‘king of the beasts’, the tiger takes its place at the head of the Chinese lunar calendar in 2022. To celebrate and mark the Chinese New Year, The Royal Mint presents the Lunar Year of the Tiger 2022 United Kingdom Coin.

The traditions of the Chinese lunar calendar extend back thousands of years. Unquestionably, the largest and most exciting event in this traditional calendar is ‘Chunjie’, the Spring Festival. This national holiday in China is punctuated by Chinese New Year celebrations, helping connect families and individuals to traditions of countless generations before. According to the Chinese zodiac, the year 2022 is the Year of the Tiger. Along with being seen as adventurous, tradition states that those born in the Year of the Tiger share many of the animal’s desirable characteristics, including courage, confidence and bravery.
