This coin set celebrates 1992, a year which saw drastic change; the EU formed on the signing of the Maastricht Treaty, John Major became Prime Minister, Bill Clinton was elected as US President, and coal mines began to close. Meanwhile, The Royal Mint reduced the size of its ten pence coin, and the florin, a coin which represented the initial step towards a decimal system when it was first introduced in 1849. The new 10p will continue in Christopher Ironside’s classic design but in a smaller and lighter size. A celebratory 50p was also introduced in honour of the UK’s entry to the EU. The Royal Mint also presents the 3rd Portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II, by sculptor Raphael Maklouf, FRSA on this 8-piece coin set’s obverse.
