Description
The traditional designs of wildebeests, kudus, and springboks that had graced the designs of South Africa’s decimal currency for years had their last hurrah in 2022 with 2023 seeing six new designs, the first year in the country’s 4th Decimal series. These new designs are exquisite and continue the tradition of paying tribute to South Africa’s fabulous variety of flora, waterfowl, and antelopes. Issued in both English and Afrikaans, the new coins are as follows:
- 5 Rand Coin, which had featured a Wildebeest, now shows a Southern Right Whale.
- 2 Rand Coin now features a springbok antelope replacing the kudo, an antelope nearly four times larger than the sleek springbok.
- 1 Rand Coin saw the Protea Cynaroid Flower replacing the Springbok.
- 50-Cent Coin depicts a Grey Loerie Bird in flight. Also known as the “Grey Go-Away-Bird,” it took over from the previous Crane Flower design.
- 20-Cent Coin replaces the King Protea Cynaroid Flower with an aloe-themed design.
- 10-Cent Coin now features a Cape Honey Bee replacing the Arum Lilly.
The Beginning Of A New Era
These legal-tender coins mark the beginning of a new era, and will arrive with a spectacular satiny, Uncirculated condition. They range in denomination from 10 cents all the way up to 5 Rands. Don’t miss out. The worldwide mintage is limited to just 10,000 sets, a remarkably tiny amount compared to mintages of similar sets released by the United States and other countries. Plus, each set comes in its original mint packaging that consists of a colorful blister pack card. And don’t forget; these coins were struck by the same mint that produces the world-famous Gold & Silver Krugerrands and Natura coins, among the most popular and collected coins in the world!
