Description
The British Monarchs Collection revisits the lives, legacies, and coinage of many legendary monarchs from Britain’s royal history. The latest release in the collection honours Charles II, the ‘Merry Monarch’ who represented the restoration of the monarchy and an end to the oppressive Puritan era. A patron of the arts with a keen interest in science, Charles II reigned during some of Britain’s most significant events, including an outbreak of the Bubonic Plague and the Great Fire
of London.
The portrait on the reverse of the coin takes us back to the seventeenth century when new machinery was installed at The Royal Mint, whilst production moved from hammering coins by hand to striking them with a machine. The portrait itself was remastered from an original five-guinea piece featuring John Roettier’s coinage portrait of Charles II.
