Description
Portugal dedicates this €2 coin to the 100th anniversary of the crossing of the South Atlantic Ocean by seaplane. The first crossing of the South Atlantic is one of the most important chapters in the history of Portuguese naval aviation and aviation. The idea of covering the distance from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro by plane was conceived by Lieutenant Sacadura Cabral during the First World War. After the war, the project was finally realised. After a successful test flight from Lisbon to Madeira, the first aeroplane flight across the South Atlantic took place on 22 March 1921.
