The UK’s Innovation in Science 50p Series continues as the 2020 Rosalind Franklin 50p has just been released – commemorating what would have been her 100th birthday!
English chemist, Rosalind Franklin sits right at the very heart of the story of DNA, with her groundbreaking research being central to the discovery of what makes us who we are.
Her legacy has now been celebrated for the very first time with the release of this UK 50p coin.
The Design
This innovative reverse design by Royal Mint graphic designer, David Knapton pays tribute to this great British scientist and includes ‘Photograph 51’ – the X-ray diffraction image taken by Franklin which was essential for developing a model of DNA.
What’s more, this 50p coin has been developed in partnership with King’s College London, where Franklin’s groundbreaking research was carried out.
