Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the release of the first coin in a stunning new 50p series of five coins featuring the Turtles of the British Indian Ocean Territory. The first coin in the series of five coins features the Green Turtle.
The second release in the new 50p Turtles series featuring the Hawksbill. The Hawksbill Sea Turtle gets its name from its narrow, elongated head that tapers sharply to a v-shaped lower jaw. It is one of the smallest species of marine Turtles, measuring 75 – 90cm in length and weighing around 70kg.
The third coin in the series of five coins features the Leatherback Turtle. The Leatherback Turtle is the largest of the sea turtle species and is easily identified by its lack of bony shell. Instead its body is covered by a layer of tough, rubbery skin which is strengthened with thousands of tiny bone plate which resemble a jigsaw puzzle.
The fourth coin in the series of five coins features the Loggerhead Turtle. The loggerhead sea turtle is named after their exceptionally large heads, and is one of the world’s largest hard-shelled turtle with adults measuring between 75cm and 100cm in length, weighing up to 160kg. With an estimated population at 40,000 to 50,000 nesting adult females, the loggerhead is considered a vulnerable species.
The Olive Ridley turtle completes the collection and gets its name from their greenish colour of its skin and shell or carapace. The Olive Ridley is one of the smallest of the sea turtles, weighing up to 100 pounds and reaching only about 2 feet in shell length. The Olive Ridley sea turtles are considered the most abundant, yet globally they have declined by more than 30% from historic records.
