Description

In 1991 the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue Decimal Proof 7 Coin collection of the present coinage of the United Kingdom.

Following the Report of the Committee of inquiry on Decimal Currency, under the Chairmanship of Lord Halsbury, the Government announced its decision in 1966 to adopt a decimal currency system of 100 new pence to the pound. Decimalisation day was fixed for 15th February 1971.

This year, then, sees the 20th Anniversary of the introduction of decimal coinage. It was a change which saw the disappearance of famous coins such as the sixpence, the twelve-sided threepence and the old bronze penny and halfpenny, and the introduction of the new decimal halfpenny, one penny, two pence and fifty pence.

The size of the pre decimal shilling and florin was retained for the decimal five and ten pence coins.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
