Description

In 2002, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Golden Jubilee, marking an extraordinary 50 years on the British throne—a milestone achieved by only a handful of monarchs in British history. To commemorate this momentous occasion, The Royal Mint released a special edition of The Sovereign, departing from the classic Benedetto Pistrucci reverse design that had graced the coin for nearly two centuries.

For this jubilee year, the reverse of The Sovereign features the shield of the Royal Arms, a design that pays homage to the iconic reverse used during Queen Victoria’s reign, particularly the 1838 Sovereign. The intricate shield is divided into four quadrants: three display the lions passant guardant of England, one features the rampant red lion of Scotland, and another showcases the golden harp of Ireland. Encircling the shield is a decorative garter, symbolizing the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom. This elegant and symbolic reverse was designed by acclaimed heraldic artist Timothy Noad, whose work captures both tradition and the significance of the Jubilee.

On the obverse, the coin bears the fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by renowned sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. This effigy, introduced in 1998, is noted for its realistic and dignified representation of the Queen, and it continued to be used on British coinage until 2015.
