Description

The Entente Cordiale was a series of agreements signed on 8 April 1904 between the United Kingdom and France, marking an end of nearly a millennium of intermittent conflict between the nations. The French term Entente Cordiale which translates to cordial agreement or understanding, originates from a letter written by the British Foreign Secretary Lord Aberdeen to his brother in which he mentioned a ‘cordial understanding between the UK and France’. In 2004, a commemorative £5 was struck to mark the centenary of the Entente Cordiale. The reverse depicts the head and shoulders of Britannia and her French counterpart Marianne.
