Description

The monarchy is one of the oldest institutions in Britian.  From the early Middle Ages it has been the cornerstone of society and has shaped the face of our nation.  The Crown Jewels – a collection of previous and highly symbolic objects – have stood for the power of the monarchy since the coronation of the first English kings.  The execution of Kings Charles I in 1649 marked a turning point in the history of the British Isles – the people had risen and challenged the divine right of kings.  Politics, religion and society would never be the same again.

To mark these celebrations, in 2010 to commemorate the 350th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Monarchy, the Royal Mint together with Royal Mail were proud to issue this commemorative Philatelic Numismatic Cover.

The reverse design is a heraldic crown which is a simplified version of Charles II’s Crown, and the floral design beneath it includes an English rose of the period and thistles representing Scotland.  The entwined C’s and lettering style are taken from the coinage of Charles II.  The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.
