Description
This is the Official Olympic £5 coin issued for London 2012. The design was chosen as part of the Royal Mint’s nationwide competition open to art and design students in higher education. The winning design by Saiman Miah features the iconic buildings of the London skyline and the River Thames within a central circle. The outer ring features pictograms in the style of a clock face, representing various sports at the London 2012 Games.
In 2012, The Royal Mint issued a £5 crown to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Commemorative Crowns are issued annually, with a unique design for each. The Diamond Jubilee Crown is the first coin ever struck to commemorate a Diamond Jubilee – there were no special coins for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
