To mark the special occasion of the official naming ceremony of RRS Sir David Attenborough on the 26th September 2019, Pobjoy Mint is excited to announce the release of a brand new 50p coin that features the famous Boaty McBoatface to celebrate this historic event.

Back in 2016, the Natural Environment Research Council launched a campaign to find a name for the United Kingdom’s next world-class polar research ship. The public then decided the best name would be Boaty McBoatface; the nation’s imagination was truly captured with the name carrying such momentum that it could not be ignored.

The design on the coin shows Boaty McBoatface being lowered into the sea from the research ship RRS David Attenborough which has the name inscribed on the side of the vessel. The background shows an iceberg behind the ship in an Antarctic landscape.
