The history of the British Red Cross dates back to 1870, following the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War, where aid was given to both warring parties under the protection of the Red Cross Emblem.

150 years on, the British Red Cross continues to exemplify human kindness in times of great crisis, not just in the UK, but the world over.

Now, you can honour this selfless organisation in its special anniversary year with the commemorative £5 coin.

The Design

Featuring bespoke artwork by designer Henry Gray, with the vibrant Red Cross Emblem as the heart of the design, this coin bears the words ‘The Power of Kindness’ to champion the organisation’s principles of selflessness, compassion and goodwill.

Fittingly, the edge inscription bears the motto of the British Red Cross, ‘PER HUMANITATEM AD PACEM’ which translates to ‘THROUGH HUMANITY TO PEACE’.
