Description
To mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of William Wordsworth, The Royal Mint issued a £5 coin.
Excitingly, this is the first time the beloved poet has been celebrated on a UK coin.
William Wordsworth is one of the most popular poets to have written in the English language. His quintessentially British poetry was inspired by his upbringing in the Lake District and gained popularity during the 1800’s and is still much-loved around the nation today.
The first-ever Wordsworth UK Coin
Designed by David Lawrence, the acclaimed designer of the Agatha Christie £2, the reverse features lines from one of Wordsworth’s most celebrated poems, ‘Tintern Abbey’.
The inspiration for the design is Scafell Pike in the Lake District — the UK’s highest peak — shown on the coin rising above a tranquil lake.
What’s more, this coin has been designed with the support of the Wordsworth Trust.
