Description
The 2023 Australian Koala 1oz Silver coin is the latest in the Koala range from the Perth Mint. This year’s coin shows a fully-grown koala with a koala cub on its back. Also shown on the coin is ‘AUSTRALIAN KOALA’, the year-date, coin weight, and fineness. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark also features in the design.
The obverse of each coin bears the coin’s monetary denomination of 1 Dollar, and a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, supplemented with the dates of her reign.

The Australian Silver Koala series from the Perth Mint began in 2007. The design on the reverse of these coins changes yearly, giving them high appeal to collectors.
When early European settlers first encountered koalas in Australia, they thought the tree-climbing animals were monkeys or bears. Even though they’re still referred to by some as “koala bears”, they’re actually marsupials like kangaroos and wombats. Koalas have special physical characteristics that compliment their tree-dwelling lifestyle. They’re able to grip branches and pick eucalyptus leaves with their two opposable digits, and their tough skin and sharp claws provide traction in climbing. They even have extra thick fur on their seat so they can sit comfortably on branches for hours.
