Description
Flying Scotsman is often hailed as the most famous steam locomotive in the world and celebrates its centenary in 2023. First introduced to the railway in 1923, Flying Scotsman still steams up and down the country, attracting hordes of admirers – from avid railway enthusiasts to members of the wider public seeking a glimpse of the famous engine. No stranger to breaking records, Flying Scotsman is currently the oldest mainline working locomotive on Britain’s tracks, having previously hauled the first non-stop London–Edinburgh service in 1928, and was the first locomotive to circumnavigate the globe in 1989.
The Royal Mint has struck a UK coin to mark 100 years of this magnificent symbol of the great age of steam. Capturing a wonderful side-on view of the locomotive on one of its many rail journeys, it features a thoughtfully crafted design by experienced coin designer John Bergdahl.
