Description

The 2025 Annual Sets celebrate the best of British culture and feature specially selected commemorative coins honouring people, institutions and events that have left an indelible mark on the nation’s history. Made using traditional skills in tandem with innovative technology, these coins embody The Royal Mint’s unwavering commitment to the finest craftsmanship.

Marking the Birth of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother is fondly remembered by the British public as a figure of national strength and resilience, notably during the Second World War. Throughout her life, which spanned more than a century, she provided staunch support to two British monarchs – her husband, George VI, and her eldest daughter, Elizabeth II. This £5 coin pays tribute to The Queen Mother with a reverse design featuring a portrait that formed part of the coin design marking her 80th birthday in 1980.

200 Years of the Modern Railway
On 27 September 1825, George Stephenson’s steam-powered Locomotion No. 1 transported hundreds of passengers in England for 26 miles between Shildon, Darlington and Stockton, marking the start of a journey that would shape the modern world. Since then, rail travel has undergone vast technological and engineering advancements – influencing tourism, cuisine, trade, law and order, post, art and even football – and continues to innovate for a simpler, better and greener future. This UK £2 coin captures that seminal journey in 1825 on its reverse and includes the edge inscription ‘ACTIVE · LOCOMOTION NO 1’.

350 Years of The Royal Observatory, Greenwich
Commissioned by Charles II in 1674 and completed a year later, the Royal Observatory was the first purpose-built scientific institution in the United Kingdom, dedicated to timekeeping and improving sea navigation. It is home to the historic Prime Meridian of the World, 0° longitude, which denotes the division between the eastern and western hemispheres. Marking 350 years since its foundation, this UK £2 coin pays tribute to the Royal Observatory with a reverse design that features the Shepherd Gate Clock, the constellation Ursa Minor, the star Polaris and the meridian line in front of a globe. The coin also includes the edge inscription ‘PERFECTING THE ART OF NAVIGATION’, taken from the Observatory’s founding Royal Warrant.

Celebrating the Red Arrows
The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, who are more commonly known as the Red Arrows, represent the speed, agility and precision of the Royal Air Force (RAF). Established in 1964, this aerobatic display team has become renowned for their precision flying and captivating performances. Since their first display in 1965, the Red Arrows have become a regular fixture at both British and international airshows, performing in almost 5,000 displays across 57 countries around the world. This UK 50p coin celebrates this inspiring team with a reverse design that depicts the distinctive Hawk T1 aircraft flown by the Red Arrows.

Remembering the Stories of the Second World War
The events of the Second World War shaped and influenced modern British society. From the soldiers who fought with extraordinary courage to the factory workers who worked tirelessly to produce munitions, all citizens of the UK and wider Commonwealth played a part in the war effort. This UK 50p coin depicts the 1939–45 Star, Defence Medal and War Medal. Awarded to millions of people for their wartime service, these medals symbolise countless unique experiences of the Second World War.
