Description
To mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of Samuel Pepys’ famous diary, a special 4-coin Brilliant Uncirculated £2 Set has been issued. Each coin features a design inspired by key moments from Pepys’ remarkable life:
- Samuel Pepys’ Famous Diary – shows Pepys seated at his writing desk, with the 17th-century London skyline behind him. The design is inspired by the 1666 portrait by John Hayls.
- The Restoration of the Monarchy – depicts the return of King Charles II in 1660, based on the royal seal of the King. Pepys witnessed the coronation and wrote extensively about his relationship with the royal court.
- The Great Plague – features a scene of a man moving a coffin and a quarantined house marked with a painted cross and the words “Lord Have Mercy on our Souls.” The design draws from original 17th-century woodcuts.
- The Great Fire of London – captures people fleeing the flames by boat during the devastating fire of 1666. The design is inspired by the famous woodcut from the time and Pepys’ own dramatic account.
Each coin has been struck to a Brilliant Uncirculated finish and is presented in a high-quality coin pack, complete with historical details.
The edition limit for this set is just 2,025 worldwide, released to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Pepys’ diary first being published.
