The British, both at home and on the front line, showed extraordinary courage in the fight against Nazi Germany and its Axis partners and as these events fade from living memory, the spirit and steadfastness of those who lived through the war survives in the form of their personal stories.
As we reflect on a conflict that is now receding into history, the reverse of a new commemorative UK coin from The Royal Mint shines a light on the lived experience of the generation who gave so much in the long, hard struggle for victory. Artist Timothy Noad pays tribute to the contributions that came from across society with a design that features the War Medal 1939–45, the Defence Medal (United Kingdom) and the 1939–45 Star that were awarded for wartime service.
