The Rare 1983 New Pence 2p Error

Between 1971 and 1981, British decimal two pence coins featured the words ‘NEW PENCE’ on the reverse, above the ostrich feather plumes of the Prince of Wales’ badge. From 1982, the wording was changed to ‘TWO PENCE’.

However, a small number of 1983-dated 2p coins were mistakenly struck using the earlier ‘NEW PENCE’ reverse design. These unusual coins are known as mule error coins, a numismatic term for a coin struck with an unintended combination of designs.

The 1983 New Pence 2p is one of the best-known modern British coin errors and remains highly sought after by collectors of rare UK decimal coins.
