Description
In 2007, to celebrate the Tercentenary of the Act of Union between England and Scotland, the Royal Mint released a Limited Issue Act of Union Piedfort £2 Two Pound Silver Proof Coin struck in solid .925 Sterling Silver.
The reverse design by Yvonne Holton divides the coin into four quarters, with a rose and a thistle occupying two of the quarters and a portcullis in each of the other two quarters. The whole is overlaid with a linking jigsaw motif and surrounded by the dates “1707” and “2007” and the denomination “TWO POUNDS” with an edge inscription “UNITED INTO ONE KINGDOM”.
The obverse is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank Broadley.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
Piedforts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks.
As their name suggests they are closely associated with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently issued by the Kings as presentation pieces.
In Britain the practice of striking piedforts is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known.
