Description
Marking 100 years since the end of the Great War
World War One, also known as the Great War, was a global conflict originating in Europe and lasting from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. The Great War would see the mobilization of 70 million military personnel in one of the largest wars in history and 16 million civilian and military casualties. 2018 will mark the 100th anniversary since the end of the war and is a momentous moment in British history commemorating a global conflict.
Reverse Design: The design depicts a lone soldier, head bowed, looking towards a cross which is surrounded by a poppy, a daisy and a cornflower, all symbols of remembrance. This represents a moment of reflection on the lost lives from the Great War. The background depicts a typical scene from the front line with barren landscapes destroyed by Allied and Axis shell fire. The inscription around the edge of the coin reads “1914 AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN 1918”.
