Risking her own life to improve the quality of others, Mary Seacole provided British soldiers with a place to recover and recuperate from the harsh reality of the front line during the Crimean War. Whilst Mary Seacole’s story may have been lost in history for almost a century, many today remember her caring spirit and selfless actions with pride, reverence and adulation. In recognition of the remarkable humanitarian contributions she made throughout her life, we honour Mary Seacole’s incredible legacy with a UK coin.
Created by Sandra Deiana, the coin’s reverse design is based on a genuine photograph of Mary Seacole held at Winchester College and taken around 1870.
