Description
British sailors first reached Hong Kong back in the late 7th century. In 1843 the region became a British Crown colony. More and more people settled in the “Fragrant Harbour” that is what the Chinese name means and in 1898, Britain leased further territories from China for 99 years. Finally, in 1997, Britain returned Hong Kong and the other territories to China. The two banknotes from Hong Kong are among the smallest in the world. Each note is printed on one side only and has a nominal value of 1 Cent. The first note was issued in 1945 under the regency of King George VI. Following the death of the king and the succession of his daughter Elizabeth ll, the note was issued with her portrait between 1961 and 1995.
