Description

Under the Ancien Régime, insurance was primarily maritime. It was a contract by which an individual agreed to repair losses related to a shipwreck, in exchange for a certain sum paid in advance. For example, in 18th-century Bordeaux, marine insurance was concentrated in the hands of a few large shipowners such as François Bonnaffé. A 1681 ordinance allowed the greatest freedom in the relationships between insurers and policyholders, hence the proliferation of players on the market. Also in Bordeaux, Parisian, Dutch, and English companies began to intervene.
Non-marine insurance became established late (mid-18th century). It most often offered fire insurance. For example, the general insurance company obtained the privilege of Louis XV in 1753 to guarantee maritime trade and to insure houses against fire.
The 19th century saw the emergence of countless companies, often specializing in highly specialized sectors, which enabled the development of the economy through risk pooling. These companies were complemented by mutual aid and mutual benefit associations.
