Description
the center of the coin shows the main building of the University of Tartu. This building is one of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in Estonia. It was built by the University architect Johann Wilhelm Krause between 1804 and 1809. It is now listed in the European Heritage List as the “embodiment of university ideas in the Age of Enlightenment”. To the left of the coin is the name of the state and the year of issue on the right. The name of the image “UNIVERSITY OF TARTUENSIS” and the year “1632” appear on the bottom of the figure. Above is engraved Latin inscription “RAHVUSÃœLIKOOL 100” (National University 100). The outer ring of the coin depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
